The Power of Mugwort As Home Medicine
Did you know that in Traditional Chinese Medicine, there’s an herb called Ai Ye, known as Mugwort, that has been used for centuries as both a sacred and medicinal plant?
Mugwort holds the energy of warmth, protection, and purification.
It is used in Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and many other folk medicines across the world.
Whether you’re using it to warm the womb, clear your home space, or apply it through moxibustion, Mugwort brings ancient medicine right to your hands.
1. Herbal Steaming with Mugwort for Womb Health
Mugwort’s warming and moving properties make it an ideal herb for herbal steaming. This practice helps:
Warm the womb space
Move stuck energy or cold
Support menstrual wellness
To try this at home, add a handful of dried mugwort into a large bowl of hot water. Allow the steam to rise, and create a tent with a towel. Sit or squat over the steam (making sure the temperature feels comfortable) for 10-20 minutes. Breathe deeply, and let the warmth sink into your womb and lower belly.
2. Mugwort for Clearing the Home Space
Mugwort is known as a protector and cleanser of energy. You can burn dried mugwort as a smoke cleanse to refresh and clear stagnant energy from your home, much like you would with sage or palo santo (but in a way that honors East Asian lineage).
Light one end of the mugwort bundle or dried leaves, gently blow out the flame, and let the smoke cleanse your home, focusing on doorways, windows, and corners where energy tends to collect.
3. Mugwort Moxibustion to Warm the Body
Mugwort is famous in Chinese medicine for its use in Moxibustion (Moxa). Moxa warms and stimulates acupoints, promotes circulation, and supports the flow of Qi and Blood. It’s especially helpful for people who tend to feel cold, tired, or blood-deficient.
To use moxa sticks at home:
Light the moxa stick and hold it about an inch above your skin (never touching it directly).
Gently warm acupressure points such as the lower abdomen or lower back (especially on cold or crampy days).
Move the moxa in small circles until the area feels pleasantly warm.
Mugwort is a beautiful reminder that the earth provides powerful allies for healing—right from our homes. Whether you work with it through steam, smoke, or moxa, this humble herb connects you to lineages of wisdom and care.
